The Starter: Round 2, Shell Houston Open
At most PGA TOUR events, especially those that are as affected by the winds of change like the Shell Houston Open, a few players go very low early Thursday and then are brought back to the pack when they play in the breezier afternoon wave on Friday. This year at Redstone, nobody ran off in the opening round, so watch out early Friday to see if an Anthony Kim, a Lee Westwood, a Justin Leonard or a Cameron Percy, who are very much in the hunt from the late wave Thursday, goes low and sets the pace for the weekend if the winds are down in the morning.
Pettersen leads Ochoa at Kraft Nabisco Championship
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) -- Suzann Pettersen went for a practically flawless desert drive in the opening round of the season's first major.
The Norwegian star, trying to bounce back from a hip injury, shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 in the Kraft Nabisco Championship on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over former champion Lorena Ochoa, who missed birdie putts on her final two holes.
If there are any lingering symptoms from a hip injury that required a cortisone shot, they weren't showing. Pettersen hit 12 fairways and 13 greens in regulation at 6,702-yard Mission Hills.
Notebook: Round 1, Shell Houston Open
Kevin Stadler and Cameron Percy share the first-round lead at the 2010 Shell Houston Open with 5-under 67s. They have a one-stroke advantage over Vaughn Taylor, James Driscoll, Kevin Sutherland and Anthony Kim. Nine players, including Phil Mickelson, are T7 at 3-under.
This is the second time Kevin Stadler has held the lead/co-lead after 18 holes in his career. Stadler shot 64 (-8) at the 2004 Buick Invitational to hold the outright lead, eventually finishing T59.
